Dear Parents/Guardians of a Georgia Girls State citizen,
The Department of Georgia American Legion Auxiliary Girls State Board strives to provide a leadership program designed to increase awareness and knowledge of the Iowa governmental processes in a mystical state from the district level, to the county and then to the state level. We do this while teaching the young women about their duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of citizenship.
Each participant will be given the opportunity to “sprout” her own wings and do things that she sometimes has no idea that she can do. She may just learn that she can win and at times she will lose, all the while she will survive. Government does not have to be dirty but fair and fun while accomplishing a task. This truly is a once in a lifetime opportunity that only happens to selected girls between their Junior and Senior year of high school.
All Girl State Citizens learn to live in a community setting, sharing a dorm room and meeting several peers all the while enjoying life at its finest. Your daughter has a chance to form friendships that could possibly last a lifetime and interact with students from different parts of the state. When your daughter leaves Girls State, she will tell you about her experiences but unless you were one of the former citizens, you will not understand how she has grown and changed. As time goes on, you will get a better understanding of her experiences and know why and how Girl State made a positive effect on her life.
Thank you so much for allowing your daughter to participate in this experience. Thank you, also for supporting the Department of Georgia American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program.

Questions from Parents
What is the Girls State program all about?
It is an intensive program where your daughter will not only learn but put into action the very principles and ideas of government by doing so while living with other young women from across the state of Georgia. This program is a gift to the young women of today from the Department of Georgia, American Legion Auxiliary.
What if we have a family emergency?
Contact the director at 770-337-7997, or the assistant director at 706-951-3906. The VSU campus can be contacted directly at (229) 563-4671.
What if my daughter gets sick or hurt at Girls State?
She will be given prompt medical attention (we have a nurse on staff) and if it is determined she needs emergency medical care, she will be taken to the local hospital.
Will my daughter be supervised for the entire week?
Yes. Your daughter will be assigned to a mythical city, and each city has a counselor. We also have other staff members who assist with Girls State who help in supervising and guiding the girls throughout the week.
